[Sustainable Development Goal 8: Good Jobs and Economic Growth] How Digital Technologies Protect the Rights of Migrants Workers

Today is the World Day of Social Justice. But how just is the current economic landscape for disadvantaged communities such as labour migrants?

Covid-19 has not only exacerbated the economic problems worldwide, but also undermined the well-being of labour migrants by bringing with it immediate and long-term risks of abuse. The oversupply of low-wage labourers without work and worldwide travel restrictions have pushed migrants to seek for jobs under riskier conditions, such as travelling through precarious border crossings and relying on unscrupulous brokers.

This is especially concerning when countries are nationalising their labour markets to preserve jobs for nationals. For example, Saudi Arabia is part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries which have imposed workforce nationalisation policies that have led to up to 4% of population lost last year from the exodus of expatriate workers, and the country has recently decided to limit remote customer service jobs to Saudi nationals.

So how would digital technology platforms protect migrant workers from exploitation and fraudulent practices, especially when companies are cutting down their budgets for compliance mechanisms?

  • Technology eliminates the need for potentially unscrupulous brokers through direct-matching platforms, such as the apps HelperChoice in Hong Kong and Samba in Singapore.
  • Oversight of conditions of supply chains through work voice tools such as Apprise Audit.
  • Empower migrants with information and resources on migration risks and policies through mobile apps like 🇳🇵Nepal’s Shuvayatra.
